Deep Creek Dunk February 23, 20123

Do the Dunk at the 15th annual Deep Creek Dunk on Saturday, February 23!
Come on out and “Do the Dunk” alongside the rare breed of thousands of Maryland Dunkers who dare to bare it all each year for the 10,000 athletes of Special Olympics Maryland! For just $50 in pledges, Dunk participants take a quick dip in Deep Creek Lake behind Uno’s Bar and Grill to raise funds for Special Olympics Maryland, the state’s largest year round organization devoted to sports training and competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. The event is free to spectators, and Dunkers receive the commemorative sweatshirt, group color photo, and the great feeling of freezing your “fur” off for a truly worthy cause! Registration is at noon and the Dunk is at 2 pm, so bring your friends and family and dunk for the Maryland Special Olympics athletes.  Long & Foster is proud to be the Official Lodging Sponsor of the Dunk. To register online, please visit DunkMD.com.

The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for citizens with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

Ice SculptureOakland Winterfest February February 15-18, 2013

Oakland Main Street will be holding its 56h Annual WinterFest February 15-18, 2013.  The festival will include approximately 20-30 ice sculptures in Downtown Oakland along Alder, Second and Liberty Streets.

The event starts on Friday with a progressive dinner. Enjoy a horse drawn sleigh ride through the area on a historical tour as well as see the sculptures lit-up while stopping at various locations for the courses of the dinner. Cost for this event is $75/ person and seating is limited to 24, so early reservations are a must. Last year’s dinner sold out quickly.

On Saturday there will be many activities available for all ages. Frozen Assets Ice Carving Company, with master carver Bill Sandusky, will be carving a large ice castle (starting on Wednesday) with a 12-foot slide for children to play on during Saturday’s events. Every 2 hours, on the hour, from 9 AM – 6 PM there will be an ice sculpture being carved at various locations within the event boundaries. Come & watch an original piece of ice-art being created!

There will be a larger than life “ice throne” to have a seat on and be a king or queen for the day! Bring your camera and have your picture taken as you sit on our ice throne, or bowl down a lane made of ice. There will be a frozen bowling alley with real pins and frozen “bowling balls” — see if you can strike it hot when the lane is cold.

Kids can take home a free personalized block of ice with their name carved in it. The crowning of the “Snow Flake Toddler Prince and Princess” will be held on Saturday as well. There’s live entertainment and hot food and drink vendors and downtown Oakland restaurants will be serving up hot chili lunch specials. There will also be free horse drawn sleigh rides through town.

The Oakland Trail will be available during the day and well-lit at night. Perfect for a nice winter stroll, snow shoe, or cross country skiing. Start at the Farm Fresh Market pavilion in the downtown free parking lot. (You need to supply the method of travel!)

The best views are from your boat in McHenry Cove, across the lake and at businesses along Garrett Highway, and Deep Creek Drive. In case of rain, the fireworks will launch on July 5. Garrett County Tourism Website has all the updates!

The fourth of July is also Free Fishing Day in the state of Maryland! No license is required to fish in any of Maryland’s fresh waters for the day!
Pack a picnic, bring the family and listen to your favorite band tunes as the Garrett Community Concert Band takes the stage under the tent on the Garrett College lawn at 7:30 pm.. It’s also a perfect spot to view the fireworks display immediately following the concert.

Garrett County Agricultural Fair July 27 – August 3, 2013

County fairs are as American as apple pie and the people in just about every county across the United States show their canned tomatoes, fruit jelly’s, handmade quilts and farm animals for the chance to win the blue ribbon. The Garrett County Fair is no exception – we just like to think ours is one of the best! Since agriculture is a historical part of our county and one-quarter of the county is farmland, it’s no wonder our residents feel that way. This fair is one of the few in Maryland that still retains its agricultural focus and attracts over 30,000 visitors. The 57th annual agricultural fair features just about everything you might expect. From the tractor pull and mud bog to four-wheel pick up pull and demolition derby, plus nightly entertainment, horse shows, amusement rides and the best fair food ever, this is one fair you shouldn’t miss. Visit www.garrettcountyfair.org for a complete schedule of events and entertainment.
